The first mechanical slots were invented by Charles Fey in 1895 and were called the Liberty Bell. This slot machine had three reels with spade, diamond and heart symbols on each reel. Fey’s invention was very popular and had a huge demand. So huge, that he couldn’t keep up with the number of orders even when his own state restricted gambling. Gambling supply manufacturers offered Fey to sell his right on Liberty Bell, but he refused. As a consequence, Herbert Mills, an arcade machine manufacturer has started producing Operator Bell — a knock-off of Liberty Bell, with some innovations like fruit symbols.
The original slots games worked by a very simple mechanism. Inside the machine there were three metal reels with ten symbols on each. When inserted a coin, the player had the possibility to pull the lever, which spins the reels. If the same symbol lines up on all three reels, than the player hits the jackpot. And the machine performed the payout in coins.
In 1964 Nevada Electronic have introduced a «21» electronic machines. Then all other gambling games followed that path, with the first all-electronic slot machine built in 1975 by the Fortune Coin Company. |
